Kirk Hamilton concludes his studies at the Milford Academy with plans to attend a prestigious college. Then he is informed by his guardian that the money left to him by his deceased father has run dry. Henceforth, he is on his own and must earn his living in whatever way he can.

The guardian's wife and son, both selfish and haughty, are prejudiced against 'poor' people. they categorize Kirk thus, treating him with open disgrace.

Kirk obtains a job with a broker but is undermined by unscrupulous persons and is unfairly dismissed. He faces one hardship after another, resorting to selling newspapers.

However, he is befriended by a wealthy importer, who has a beautiful daughter...
