Randy-a girl with a boy's name-lives in the slums with 'Granny,' an old woman who mistreats her and takes her small earnings. A brilliant child under all the layers of dirt, she does anything she can make a dime. No lawful occupation is beneath her: street sweeping . . . newspaper selling . . . baggage handling. . . . And she often longs for a square meal.

A sea captain decides to try to make a young lady of her; unfortunately, the home in which he places her does not work out. She takes her fall through a proud daughter of the home who looks down on her.
